Description
Food Train is an award winning Scottish Charity helping frail older people who struggle to do their own grocery shopping. Our trusted, friendly volunteers provide a vital weekly food order collection, shopping and delivery service which helps older people stay healthy and independent at home and helps combat social isolation amongst them.
Our Glasgow branch is currently seeking Volunteer Delivery Helpers to work any day from Monday-Thursday, roughly between 9.00am-3.30pm each day.
The delivery helper assists the driver in loading the van and carrying the shopping into the customer’s house, but has a lead role with the customer interface. Helpers are responsible for collecting the cost of the shopping and the Food Train delivery charge from the customers. The driver and helper should stay together at all times in the customer’s house and drivers are expected to witness all cash handling carried out by the helper.
Helpers should be good at handling money and the basic arithmetic of addition (shopping plus delivery charge) and calculating change due. Helpers should have a tolerant nature and have empathy and understanding of the challenges facing older people living alone.
Delivery Helpers will have to apply for a PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups, which Food Train pay the costs for) as they come in direct contact with our older customers. You'll need 3 forms of ID to support the PVG application:
•1 x photographic form of ID eg passport, photo card driver’s licence
•1 x address confirmation eg bank statement, utility bill, pensions or benefits letter which must be dated within the last three months
•1 x other form of ID eg birth certificate, National Insurance card etc.
Uniforms are provided as well as photographic ID badges after a short trial period. As they are expensive to provide, we ask our volunteers to try us out for a short while to make sure the role is right for them and that they are right for us. This is usually a period of about 4 weeks, but is often less.
We ask all volunteers to give us as much notice as possible if unable to turn up for their shift. Replacements can usually be found with advance notice but an on the day ’no-show’ can seriously affect the ability to deliver and has a real consequence on our customers, most of whom are housebound due to age related frailty, disability or ill health.
Expenses are repayable for your travel to the Food Train office or supermarkets visited
