Description
St. Kilda A photographic album by Margaret Buchanan Hardcover, 80 Pages, Published 1983 by W. Blackwood. A large A4 plus sized, hardback book with dustjacket.
The story of St Kilda is one of a bitter struggle for survival of a remote island community. Situated about 110 miles from the Scottish Mainland, the islands once supported a self sufficient farming community. The development of steamships in the nineteenth century opened the economy to imported goods, and the islanders came to rely on the mainland for essential supplies, and on the production of goods for sale to an increasing number of tourists. Emigration progressively reduced the population to a point where life on the islands could not be sustained. In 1930 St Kilda was evacuated.
In an essay accompanying over eighty illustrations the author describes the pattern of settlement, the island people, their culture and their economy - and finally the tragic events which led to the destruction of a distinctive way of life.
