GENERAL
2010 Toyota Hiace 300 D-4D 120 LWB
I bought the van in September 2011. It was an ex Toyota demonstrator van for Toyota Helensburgh, top of the range model.
The van was put into storage before undergoing professional conversion during 2012 into early 2013. The conversion was carried out in two phases. First, the fitting of a customised pop-top roof specific to our design needs. I chose a renowned specialist firm in Keighley, Yorkshire for this work. You may see that most Hiace campers out there have a poptop roof which peaks at the rear.... David Waring of Drivelodge Motorhomes put in some extra work and engineered the pop-top to elevate at the front, a key requirement for our design.
Simple design brief - A large comfortable King Size bed
Our principle was to prioritise sleeping comfort over other considerations, having seen many other vans with crampt sleeping berths.
The main feature is a full width (King Size) bed folding up to a 3-place seat with 'Rock n Roll' mechanism. Caledonian Conversions of Glasgow carried out the conversion work.
There is a double hob with sink, a table, and the van is equipped with a Fiamma pull-out awning. For durability and comfort the van seats front and back are lined in two-tone leather. For 'all-season' capability a dual-fuel heater will heat the van either from the Electric Hook-Up, or from the van's own gas supply.
Caledonian Conversions incorporated some nice ideas that we hadn't the experience to envisage, such as a clever pull-out storage unit (their cabinetmaker is an ex-yacht fitter).
The van comes with a lot of equipment. For all features, please click on this link to the specification and summary page.
We have been as far away as Bordeaux. The van has been perfectly reliable - there has never been a breakdown or so much as a burst tyre. It will provide its new owners with many years of driving and camping pleasure. Everywhere it goes we receive kind compliments about the van from enthusiasts; they love the design. It is quite similar to the old VW T3's with the full width bed arrangement.
The engine is the more powerful of the two options from the Hiace range with plenty of torque - it handles steep hills with ease. So if you are thinking of the alps down to Italy, it will handle that comfortably. Fuel economy is good at 35-40 mpg.
Since finishing the conversion the van has been continuously improved. Black-out lined curtains have been fitted all around the sleeping compartment. A good stereo system has been fitted and the factory speakers have been upgraded together with a floor mounted subwoofer placed under the double front seat. There is remote control for this.... All fitted professionally - the installation sounds fantastic with the extra bass.
The most recent improvement is the addition of a Heavy duty Witter towbar with electrics so that bicycles can be carried on tour. Alternatively a small day-sailer boat can be towed or a utility trailer. This Hiace is rated to tow trailers of up to 2000kg.
The camper is cared for attentively on an ongoing basis. I regularly wash and polish with Autoglym products. The engine bay is kept clean by hand as well as the general interior. All of the leather has been treated with leather care product. All of the paintwork has been cleaned perfectly using the clay bar method. The floor is hand cleaned, never mopped - this is to avoid the possibility of any water reaching beneath units or going where it ought not to.
This web page will be updated to provide as much information as possible, so photographs will be added as we go. I will also try to upload some video. The current mileage is low at 34,786 but this will rise as the van is still in use. The van is offered for sale at £23,000.
Use the contact form if you have any queries and I will respond promptly. For those with an interest there are a huge number of photos of the van showing its quality.
The van can be viewed by appointment at our home near Loch Lomond, Scotland. A demonstration test drive can be arranged for genuinely interested parties.
Any professional inspection / survey is welcomed. A refund of this will be available should you go on to purchase the van.
With best wishes,
Stephen
